Community calls for compo after toxic dump plans dropped
The decision by the Victorian Government to abandon plans to build a toxic waste dump near Mildura has prompted a call for compensation for those who fought against the proposal.

The Government's proposal to build a toxic dump at Nowingi was scrapped on the recommendation of an independent review panel because of planning concerns.

Nowingi was the fourth location proposed by the Government for a toxic dump site in seven years.

The Member for Mildura, Peter Crisp, says the local community spent around $2 million and thousands of hours trying to stop the project going ahead.

"A huge resourcing effort for any country community to do," he said.

Victoria's Deputy Liberal Leader Louise Asher says there is a real case for compensation, after several groups spent a lot of money fighting the plan.

The Government says it will use the Lyndhurst landfill site for industrial waste and will increase industry landfill levies to fund new waste processing technology.
